A Health Teacher Instructs Her Students About The Relevant Issues Involved In Alcohol Addiction Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most financially challenged parochial high school in the county. Even though she had been teaching for only four years, she had already obtained a reputation as an educator with instructional approaches that motivated and encouraged the pupils in her class to learn and to think.

For example, one Monday afternoon at 1:00 she addressed her pupils and announced the following: "For the next few days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a general standpoint and we are also going to learn about a number of the best known signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed point of view."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will beyond doubt demonstrate that an individual with a drinking problem is an alcoholic, but the more signs that an individual exhibits, the stronger the possibility that she or he is an individual who is alcohol dependent."

Miss Jackson then told the the students that each person would be held responsible for examining three alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her results to the rest of the class via a five minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were presented and discussed in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her class to go over the list and rank the top ten alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After around ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to the pupils in her class that after she tallies the numbers, she will reveal her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson told the students in her classroom to look over the information on the piece of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, issues, or questions. Within 40 or 50 seconds, almost every student in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was apparent that the pupils had some concerns, questions, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For example, virtually every pupil had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, that is to say, "Do you feel extremely nauseous when you quit drinking?"

Miss Jackson then informed the pupils in her class why this answer was the most unambiguous sign of alcohol addiction. She underlined the fact that the main difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.

In effect this means that when an alcoholic abruptly quits drinking, she or he will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcohol addicted individual, the students started to appreciate the primary difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating that the end of class had arrived. Based on the buzz manifested by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson recognized that she had inspired and motivated the students in her classroom to stop and think about a vital social problem and health issue that exists in our country.
