A Young Gentleman Requires Counseling For His Severe Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Alcohol And Drug Addiction

About eight months ago I had lunch with a thirty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship issues, and who is dependent on drugs and alcohol. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his alcohol and drug dependency and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his recurring relationship problems.

As articulated by Benjamin, he is so defeated by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical conditions that he, for all intents and purposes, has little or no impetus to do much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished three semesters of grad school in criminal justice.

Benjamin's condition makes me question if he is an illustration of an individual who can address his drinking problems and substance abuse and do something healthy about these problems. Or, conversely, if he is an individual who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets alcohol and drug addiction counseling that results in long-term recovery.

It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his alcohol and drug addiction. For starters, there are more than a few recently discovered physician-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin through his withdrawal symptoms, through the alcohol and alcohol detox process, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in rehabilitation he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is absolutely nothing affirmative about drug addiction and careless and hazardous drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the map to poor work and school performance, legal problems, shattered relationships, deteriorating health, financial difficulties, and a premature death. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him manage these psychological difficulties more successfully and help create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in treatment he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Since Benjamin lacks the fortitude to achieve much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he urgently needs a little hope for a better life. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the therapy he requires for his intense depression and alcohol dependency and drug addiction and stay with his treatment protocol.

Benjamin is simply too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't understand this right now but if he can learn how to abstain from drugs and alcohol through alcohol and drug therapy and get the treatment he needs for his extreme depression, he can turn his life around and start living with self-respect, passion, and direction.

More solid relationships, a wonderful life, self esteem, and affirmative change are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to get the medical treatment he requires, follow through with his therapy program, live his life in a sober and healthy manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his life.
