Excessive And Hazardous Drinking Leads To Depression And Mental Health Issues, An Enabling Wife, And Inspiration For Positive Change
It took quite a few years but Sarah at long last made up her mind that she had enough with her husband's abusive drinking. She was sick of seeing Keith come home after 2:00 AM from drinking instead of spending much needed time with the family. She was also tired of the second DUI Keith recently got. Furthermore she was tired of generating excuses for her husband when he couldn't show up for work due to his careless drinking.
In a similar manner, she was concerned about the fact that their relationship was going downhill due to Keith's excessive and abusive drinking. And finally she was sick of the dangerous financial situation into which he had placed his family due to his abusive drinking behavior.
One Monday evening when Sarah was reflecting on what she could do about her husband's excessive and abusive drinking, she got to the point that she simply had to do something helpful to cut into the harmful cycle of Keith's careless drinking behavior. So Sarah looked on the Internet under "alcohol treatment" and discovered more than a few rehab clinics that were all located less than 50 miles away from where her husband and she resided.
When Sarah called each treatment center she introduced herself and stated that her spouse was exhibiting excessive and abusive drinking behavior. She also mentioned that Keith had a top quality health insurance at work and that inpatient or outpatient alcohol treatment would be covered if a doctor in the company health program authorized the treatment.
After listening to Sarah talk about her husband's careless and hazardous drinking, the therapist in a caring but firm way explained to Sarah how she probably adding to her husband's careless and hazardous drinking through the months and the years. How? Essentially by minimizing his drinking behavior rather than letting him go through the outcomes of his excessive and abusive drinking behavior.
In a word, the healthcare practitioner stated to Sarah that she may have been unintentionally enabling Keith's careless and abusive drinking behavior. The therapist also underscored the fact that Sarah would not be able to control her husband's actions. With the encouragement and support of the rehabilitation team at the healthcare center, however, she would not only be able to learn how to avoid contributing to Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking but she would also be able to learn how to encourage him to make an appointment at the rehabilitation facility so that he could discuss his careless and abusive drinking behavior with a therapist.
The good news was that after Sarah discussed this with Keith and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been very upset with his careless and hazardous drinking behavior and that he was somewhat comforted to hear that Sarah wanted to do something positive about his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. As a consequence, he made an appointment to see a therapist at the local alcohol rehabilitation center.
While simply calling a treatment program does not ensure that a person's excessive and hazardous drinking behavior will become less problematic or that a person will automatically be more open to learning about alcohol abuse facts, calling for an appointment is undeniably a necessary aspect in the treatment process. And since Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting quality assistance for his abusive and unhealthy drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was significantly augmented.
