Miniature Puppy Training

Why dog lovers hold this preconceived view that small dogs are more hard to educate than medium sized or larger dogs, I will never be able to understand. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should never be difficult.

Small dog training, is no different from training a puppy dog of any other bigger sized breed. While training any pup will have its peculiarities, based on its breed, most all other aspects remain the same, and the method to training the puppy should be the same, regardless its size.

Having said that, I will grant an allowance here, and admit that small dog training may pose problems in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nonetheless, this is not because the size of the dog breed is small, but in all case studies, because of the owner.

If a smallish breed puppy is aggressive and cannot be disciplined, or if a tiny breed puppy cannot be potty trained or poses difficulties in being bathroom trained, it is the owner who has not knowingly contributed to this dilemma. Let us investigate how and why.

Aggression.

Small dogs are liked because they are adorable, they are like toys. Owners enjoy having their pet sit on their laps. This kind of indulgence is where the trouble gets going. The inherent aggressive trait of the dog, is to declare ownership over its domain, its food, even its master; all canines need to be the alpha dog.

It is the aggressive streak in the pup that induces it to climb on to the lap of its owner, especially when there are a number of people gathered in the room.

This is a obvious act of aggression. Instead of reprimanding the puppy, every owner bar no one, would fondle the pooch, although it jumped on to their lap unbeckoned, developing the aggressive streak in the pup. As a result the owner has seconded the puppy's basic instinct to be the alpha dog.

Growling and getting mad at a a larger size dog is another blatant act of aggression. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is seen as cute, because one dog is very small while the other is larger. Most owners cuddle the pooch instead of chastising it, when it demonstrates this aggression against a larger dog.

The above are but illustrations as to why small pups are aggressive, and positively not because small dog training is complicated.

Crate Training

Owners choose to carry their small dogs around no matter where they are, even when they are in the house and that makes it plain difficult to toilet train them

It is, as if by second nature that the owners of miniature breed dogs to cart the animal to the designated place where the dog should do its dirty business and then carry it back into the house.

It is this practice of carrying the dog to the place where is should do its business that is the start of all complications. In addition, because the pup is as a rule carried around all the time it has no way of it indicating to or alerting the owner that it has to make its business.

Small dog training begins with treating the dog as any other sized dog. They have to be transported to their bathroom area on a leash. If owners cease carrying their small breed dogs they would be very successful in training them.

Dog crate training, is the best part of dog training, and so it has to be, even in Small Dog Training.
